Pirate Maths!

The day started off with an assembly as today was maths day. Miss Mckenley started the assembly but whilst she was talking we were interrupted by Captain Richard Morgan who told us about how he is lost from his home, The Good Ship of Mathematics. He explained that he landed in Leicester after his boat was hit by a storm. He was told to find the best problem solvers at Millfield L.E.A.D Academy. He told us we had to help him get back to his ship by solving maths challenges. “Pirates love maths because it is fun!” quoted Captain Morgan.

We all went into the hall and Captain Morgan set us a pirate challenge. We had to go around the hall finding objects. On the objects was a maths challenge that we had to solve. Next we played really exciting game called pirate statues.

Each year group also had their own pirate challenge. Year 1 did work on counting and did activities on matching the key to the lock. Year 2 did activities on comparing and ordering maths. Year 3 answered a big question. What does a thousand look like? Year 4 had a big fun game of battle ships as a whole class and they looked at coordinates as well. Unfortunately Year 5 went on a school trip on maths day so they didn’t get to participate in maths day. Finally, Year 6 made their own coordinates, translation, rotation and reflection. We all had a great maths day solving challenging fun problems.
