On Monday
last week, the year 6’s had an ex-fire-fighter come in to talk to them about
health and safety during bonfires and fireworks. We were told we can now
officially have a criminal record and that we need to act safely during the
acts of fireworks and sparklers. We answered important questions and answered
them sensibly. Once ensured we had a reasonable understanding of the dangers,
we were allowed to see a proper fire engine.
Our first
activity was dressing up Miss Evans. Two firemen got out their kits and laid
them out on the floor. One of them explained each individual piece of the kit
and their role whilst the other one dressed up Miss Evans- she looked
flawless. Above are some of the pictures of her in heroic poses. We then took
turns trying on a protective hat, above are some photos. The helmets are quite
heavy, as are their oxygen tanks and most of their kit. We were then showed
what would happen if a firefighter got lost in a fire. If they laid completely
still for 20 seconds, an almost deafening alarm would be set off. The main
source would be notified and more fighters would go in.
After
this, we got to see a tour of the fire engine and their equipment. Did you know
they hold 1,800 litres of water in their tank? They are now a fire and rescue
service and they do actually rescue cats from trees! Their equipment was very
heavy but everything had an important role. Miss Evans’s class did
get to see the whole of the truck, but the other class didn’t- but they did get
to witness the truck being rushed to an emergency.
Overall,
it was an amazing experience and I truly loved it! I would definitely do it again.
