Year 6 are creating scripts and puppets for a learning day. They
are currently reading a book called ‘Goodnight
Mister Tom’.
It’s about an evacuee, who has a
puritan- a person who believes fun is sinful- mother. She beats him, whips him
with a belt and hurts him. When war breaks out, he is sent to an old man called
Thomas Oakley. He was a gentle man but after his wife and son died at birth, he
became a man with no feelings. William, the evacuee, softens Tom and they
create a strong father-son bond. Tom loves the boy as does will, and Tom
doesn’t whip him. When a letter is received from Will’s mother saying she’s
mentally ill, Will is sent back. His mother beats him and locks him under the
stairs tied up, with his new-born sister. Tom comes looking for him because he
hasn’t heard from him in a month and finds him in a room with a baby. Will
tried to feed the baby but she died as she needed to be breast-fed. They
discover Will and he’s put into hospital. He is under physiological treatment
then against his will, put into a children’s home. Tom doesn’t like that it’s
against his will and kidnaps him to take him home. Will recovers and goes on
holiday with Tom.
We are now up to that point. We are now recreating a scene using
puppets and performing it. I will probably update you next term on the ending…
