Wow Me

Last week on Friday, the weekly KS2 wow was held. Occasionally, Mr Jordan steps in for Mr Wood if he is busy/cannot make the assembly and that is what happened this time.

He started by welcoming the parents to the assembly and then moved onto the wows. 1st up was three girls: Leanna, Freya and Patricija. They showed their artwork they had created for the 100th anniversary of the ending of World War 1. After this, Will form Mr Scott’s class was awarded a certificate for his outstanding drawing and labelling mountain facts! Next to come up was 2 year 5 children, Sylvester and Janvi, for their progress in their behaviour for learning.

Next up was accelerated readers. With 30,000 words was: Erin, Harry, Alex, Charlotte and Lily. With 50,000 words was: Aryaa, Daisy, Bella, Max, Antoni, Emilia, Leah, Justina, Olivia, Edward, Ryan, Lorenzo, Kye, Freya and Sol. And finally, with 100, 000 words was: Alisha, Daisy, Justina, Ryan, Ruby, Alan and Anna.

It is so nice to see the progress and effort in our learning that the children of Millfield create.

New Things to Explore

As always we start of the assembly with attendance! Ten out of twelve classes got above ninety-six percent and the winning class was year one, Mrs Berries’ class! Well Done Year One!

This week we talked about a man called Ross Edgley, he swam around the whole of Britain!

We talked about what we would have to show to complete this challenge: Self-belief, Confidence, Perseverance, Enthusiasm, Bravery and lots more!

Then we said we should show this in our learning!

Sports WOW

There were many sporting wows last week and it was amazing watching the P.E success of our school. The events included Prestwold hall, years 1 and 2 and years 3 and 4 Change for life competitions and even 2 wows, who were awarded to Eunice and Ryan for their amazing school work.

I really enjoyed watching and listening about the fun and competitive sides of our students of Millfield.

Class 6FE Assembly

On Wednesday the 14th, Year 6 class FE had an assembly on WWII that included songs from the time such as ‘The White Cliffs of Dover’ and ‘We’ll Meet Again’. They were discussing that there were 61 countries involved and everyone from those countries fought in some way.

Year 6 Beaumanor Hall trip

Last week on Thursday, the year 6’s went to Beaumanor Hall. A place that has been standing since World War 2! To start off the day, the year 6’s learnt about discipline and good manners. We were told that girls had to sit upright with their backs straight and boys had to ALWAYS let the girls and ladies go before them. The boys even had to take off their hats indoors and hold open the doors for the girls, in return the girls must say ‘thank you sir’; this even included when going in air shelters.

The classes were split to do each activity separately. 6FE class went off to decode messages first. We learned that Beaumanor was a top-secret code-breaker organisation during World War 2. Its buildings were designed to look like normal Britain estates, such as: farmhouses with yellow bricks to look like hay; a normal house, with normal surroundings and much more. We sat in the very room women used to listen to radio messages and ladies could be in there listening to static and messages for up to 11 hours. We listened to messages and decoded them.

On the next activity, we learned about rationing and how growing your own vegetables could help with the war effort. Rations were small and expensive. Most people were only left with 40 pence a week to spend!

It was a great day and experience. I loved to dress up as an evacuee.

Poppies at school

To celebrate Remembrance Day, Year sixes created a soldier covered in poppies and inside them was what the year sixes thought remembrance meant to them!

In the hall the soldiers were stuck to the wall with poppies all around them. Also around the school there was lots of poppy related things!

In year six both classes wrote News reports about Remembrance Day and the World War 1 (The Great War!) Two of the best reports were re-written and put on the wall in the teaching room for everyone to see!

Assembly

As expected we started off with the attendance certificates! Last week all twelve classes got over 96%! Miss Perry’s class got the extra time on the play equipment for getting the highest attendance! The question of the day was ‘can remembering the past help us make a better future’. We then watched a video and we had a discussion about the previous question.

This year it is the 100th year anniversary from the First World War ending. We had many educated guesses on the importance of the war, and we then sung a song to help us remember our losses.

Year 6 Fire fighter visit

On Monday last week, the year 6’s had an ex-fire-fighter come in to talk to them about health and safety during bonfires and fireworks. We were told we can now officially have a criminal record and that we need to act safely during the acts of fireworks and sparklers. We answered important questions and answered them sensibly. Once ensured we had a reasonable understanding of the dangers, we were allowed to see a proper fire engine.

Our first activity was dressing up Miss Evans. Two firemen got out their kits and laid them out on the floor. One of them explained each individual piece of the kit and their role whilst the other one dressed up Miss Evans- she looked flawless. Above are some of the pictures of her in heroic poses. We then took turns trying on a protective hat, above are some photos. The helmets are quite heavy, as are their oxygen tanks and most of their kit. We were then showed what would happen if a firefighter got lost in a fire. If they laid completely still for 20 seconds, an almost deafening alarm would be set off. The main source would be notified and more fighters would go in.

After this, we got to see a tour of the fire engine and their equipment. Did you know they hold 1,800 litres of water in their tank? They are now a fire and rescue service and they do actually rescue cats from trees! Their equipment was very heavy but everything had an important role. Miss Evans’s class did get to see the whole of the truck, but the other class didn’t- but they did get to witness the truck being rushed to an emergency.

Overall, it was an amazing experience and I truly loved it! I would definitely do it again.
