Votes For Women
Today’s assembly was a bit different from all the others, as
today we had a special visitor! Our visitor was Mr Peter Barratt, who is the
great-grandson of local suffragette, Alice Hawkins. Mrs Hawkins was born in
1863 and tragically died in 1946. She fought for the right of women’s votes.
Sometimes her passion to avenge the rights, led her to the devastating
consequence of jail. This happened quite a few times during her protests. She
was very important during her time and even still today as we are all equal,
boys and girls! Seen as we would not live this equally without her, why not
make a statue. We watched a short video about the making of Alice Hawkins’s
statuette. It contained information about her life as well.
Mr Barratt also came around to all our class-rooms and
talked with us some more about the suffragettes.
It was an eye-opening experience for all of us!
Thank you so much Mr Barratt for coming in and expanding our
knowledge on the suffragettes! J
